Sarah hung the last damp towel on the line, savoring the crisp January air despite the chill. She glanced over and spotted her neighbor Claire unloading luggage from her car, moving slowly, shoulders slumped.
"Claire! You're back! How was Colorado?"
Claire looked up, managing a tired smile. "Hey, Sarah. It was... it was wonderful, actually. Just too short, you know?" She set down a suitcase with a thud. "Feels like I blinked and suddenly I'm back here facing a mountain of laundry and my inbox is already blowing up."
Sarah walked to the fence, concern creasing her brow. "You look exhausted, hon. Bad flight?"
"The flight was fine. It's just..." Claire sighed, leaning against the fence post. "You know how it is. Between the travel, being around my cousins' kids who were all sniffling, trying to catch up with everyone, staying up late... and now I'm back, and it's straight into client meetings tomorrow. I can already feel that scratchy throat thing starting, and I just feel so... depleted. Like I need another vacation to recover from my vacation."
"Oh, I know that feeling." Sarah nodded sympathetically. "Actually, can I tell you about something that's been a game-changer for me? Especially this time of year?"
Claire's eyes lit up slightly. "Please. I'll take any advice that doesn't involve 'get more sleep' because that's not happening with my schedule."
Sarah laughed. "No judgment here. So, you know how I'm always experimenting with herbs and teas? Well, I started taking ashwagandha about three months ago, and honestly, it's been amazing."
"Ashwa-what-now?"
"Ashwagandha," Sarah repeated with a grin. "I know, sounds exotic. It's this root that's been used in Indian medicine forever. The thing is, it helps your body actually handle stress better instead of just masking it. When I started taking it before bed, I noticed I was sleeping more deeply, and I wasn't waking up already stressed about my to-do list."
Claire's interest piqued. "Before bed? Does it make you groggy?"
"Not at all. That's the beautiful thing—it's not a sedative. It just helps calm that whole stress response system. You know that feeling when you're exhausted, but you're also somehow wired? It helps with that." Sarah paused, watching Claire's expression. "But here's what I think would really help you right now—astragalus."
"Another one?" Claire laughed despite her fatigue.
"Bear with me! Astragalus is specifically for immune support, and it's preventive. I started adding it to my morning tea back in October, and this is the first winter in years I haven't gotten sick. My kids brought home every bug imaginable from school, and I barely had a sniffle."
Claire's eyes widened. "Okay, you have my full attention. Where do you even get these things?"
"Literally any drugstore, Whole Foods, Amazon. They're just supplements—totally over-the-counter. I get mine at that Sprouts on Main Street." Sarah warmed to her subject. "The astragalus I usually simmer like a tea in the morning, or you can get capsules if that's easier. The ashwagandha I take as a capsule at night. I just started with the basic Nature's Way brand to see if it would work for me."
"And it actually works? Like, you really notice a difference?"
"I really do. It's not dramatic like taking a pain reliever or something. It's more subtle—you realize after a few weeks that you're not catching everything going around, you're handling the daily chaos better, you have more energy that actually lasts instead of running on fumes and coffee." Sarah smiled knowingly. "With your schedule and everything you juggle, I think it could make a real difference."
Claire pulled her coat tighter against the breeze. "You know what? I'm willing to try anything at this point. Post-vacation depression is real, and I can't afford to get sick right now."
"Start with the ashwagandha for now—it'll help you recover from the travel stress and adjust back to your routine. Then maybe add the astragalus next week for the immune support. Just take them consistently. That's the key."
"Consistently. Right. Like everything else in life." Claire chuckled ruefully. "But if it helps even a little..."
"It will," Sarah assured her. "And Claire? Next winter, start them in October. That's when I begin, and it makes such a difference getting ahead of it instead of playing catch-up."
"October. Got it." Claire grabbed her suitcase with renewed purpose. "I'm going to order some tonight. Thank you—really."
"Anytime, neighbor. Now go inside before you freeze. We'll catch up properly this weekend!"
As Claire headed toward her door, she called back, "Sarah? What was that first one called again?"
"Ashwagandha! A-S-H-W-A..."
Their laughter carried across the fence, warm despite the winter cold.
